WELC was awarded a grant from the Texas Bar Foundation. We are so beyond grateful to be picked to receive this gift to help towards facilitating stability for domestic violence survivors.
Local domestic violence attorney and former WWE Pro-Wrestler are awarded grant from the Texas Bar Foundation for domestic violence advocacy. BD Wolfe and her husband created the Women’s Empowerment Legal Center in early 2022 with the goal to provide free legal services for those coming out of domestic violence situations along with ancillary services such as financial literacy and physical wellness.
The nonprofit saw the need for helping relieve the backlog that so many domestic violence nonprofits are facing. The local district attorney’s office released information that they are working on clearing a backlog that may take 2.5 years to complete because of Covid. BD Wolfe states, “Domestic violence was almost a shadow pandemic during Covid. Survivors were stuck. They had no way to safely leave. Now that the world is opening up again, many survivors are looking for services so that they can get out, become stable, and start over. That’s where we come in.
Protective orders may just be a piece of paper to some, but the Women’s Empowerment Legal Center seeks to provide protective orders for those needing a safe exit. The first 48 hours that a woman leaves a domestic violence situation can be the most lethal. It is integral to have support. The Women’s Empowerment Legal Center seeks to give that help.
Since its inception in 1965, the Texas Bar Foundation has awarded more than $24 million in grants to law-related programs. Supported by members of the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Bar Foundation is the nation’s largest charitably-funded bar foundation.
